Developing hospital
social work: Global experiences and recommendations for Vietnam
Nguyen
Ngoc Huong
Abstract: In 2010, the Prime Minister of
Vietnam approved the Project 32 setting the foundations for the development of
Vietnamese social work. In 2011, Vietnam Ministry of Health further announced a
national plan to incorporate social work into Vietnam’s existing hospital
system. However, the hospital system in Vietnam has been in existence for a
long time while social work is a new profession; thus the incorporation of
social work into Vietnamese hospitals requires caution in order not to cause
disruptions to the hospital system. To have a successful incorporation, Vietnam
must find answers to two questions:
(1) What can Vietnam learn from global experiences in developing hospital social work, and (2) What would be the most
appropriate trajectory and action plan to incorporate social work into existing
Vietnamese hospitals? This paper aims to provide partial answers to these two
questions by first discussing the historical development of hospital social
work in the U.S. and other countries, as well as the roles of hospital social
workers. Then the paper will discuss challenges to incorporating social work
into existing hospitals in Vietnam and recommend an action plan to develop
hospital social work for the country.

and be trusted: An analysis of gender-based social trust
Nguyen
Quy Thanh
Abstract: Utilizing the data compiled from
1430 respondents in 5 province/cities in Vietnam, the paper examined on
determinism of gender in social trust toward different social groups as well as
toward generalized social trust (whom
does each gender trust?). At the same time, the paper tried to unveil gender-a
social characteristic of, as the subject of social trust (trustworthiness of
gender characteristic). The findings show that both single and multivariate analysis
has confirmed the certain influence of gender on trust or un-trust level
individuals. The difference of trust and un-trust level within a gender is very
significant for the individuals/groups stand in pole “weak ties” and pole
“strong ties” of the axis weak ties-strong ties. However, the difference in
gender-based trust clearly appeared in cases of individuals/groups who stand
somewhere in the middle of the axis. The most polarization of gender-based
trust between genders occurred when gender itself is the object of the trust.

Austroasian culture
Phan Huu
Dat
Abstract:
The
existence of the three linguistic families namely the Austroasian, the Austric
and the Pacific was mentioned by W. Schmidt in the BEFEO Journal in 1907. Based
on that essay, scientists have analyzed the existence of the Austroasian
culture. Over the past century of
debates, nowadays many scientists are in favor of his point of views. However,
the development of science has opened new approach in looking at the issue.
According to W. Schmidt, people in South Asia have similar cultural factors due
to their long-term interacts within the historic ethnographical region, or in
another word-the cultural history. The exist different peoples of different
levels with both Austroasian and Austronesian languages in South-East Asia
where Vietnamese people live in both main land and island regions. Therefore,
the Vietnamese culture is not only reflecting the Austroasian culture but it
should be seen at a wider scope, i.e. the Austric.
