Abstract: This paper
deals with concept of the word as a fundamental linguistic unit and how
to use it to describe the Vietnamese language. Differences of use of
this concept between Vietnamese linguists Nguyen Kim Than, Do Huu Chau,
Ho Le, Nguyen Van Thac … led to discrepancies and unrealities when they
treated with Vietnamese words. Considering word as a fundamental
linguistic unit, treat indivisibly with Vietnamese words, author of this
paper overcomes discrepancies and unrealities that another Vietnamese
linguists have got. As fundamental unit of language, word should be
considered in their all phonetic, semantic, grammatical and orthographic
aspects. That is why Vietnamese word is a smallest meaningful unit
differed from all the rest. Its form is a syllable and orthographic
continuity. Lexical unites are built of combination of syllables
(morphosyllables) should be called phrasal lexeme.
