Abstract: In the Vietnamese language, there exists correspondence between the North Central and the Northern dialects, such as tru (buffalo), cú (a kind of grass), du (daughter-in-law), vô (enter), etc. and trâu, gấu, dâu and vào respectively.
Prof. Nguyễn Tài Cẩn (1995) considered this the evidence for the
renovation of the rhyme */o/, */u/ in the “subgroup Việt-Mường)” and
posited that such renovation occurred from the Old Việt to the
pre-modern Việt, i.e. the Middle Việt period.
Additional data from the whole Việt-Mường
(group Việt-Mường/Vietic) group in recent years reveal that such a
rhyme change seems not to have occurred in the “subgroup Việt-Mường”.
Furthermore, the correspondence that demonstrates this change points to
the possibility that in the proto-Việt-Mường (proto Vietic) period, the
Vietnamese language contained vowels with the same openness which are
yet phonologically contrastive in a more complicated manner, e.g. long, short (brief) or open;
these vowels later changed to */o/, */u/ in “the subgroup Việt-Mường”.
This is possibly the reason why they are under different treatments
currently available.
