Abstract:
The time from 500 BC to AD 500 is defined
by scholars as the critical period in the cultural and historical
process of Vietnam in particular and in Southeast Asia in general.
Recent archaeological finds and discoveries lead us to recognize the
dynamic cultural contacts of the area with the external world and strong
acculturation between the exogenous and indigenous factors which led
the emergence and development of the early polity so-called chiefdoms
and the transformation from chiefdoms which evidenced the low social
complexity to the state polity with the higher social complexity.
This transformation process of political
structures in the societies from the proto-historic to early historic
periods (i.e the formation of the early states of Linyi inheritated the
Sa Huỳnh chiefdoms) in Central Vietnam is not of radical, sudden nature.
This is the results of the gradual transformation process, which based
on the local ground and influenced by the internal needs and external
impacts including political, economic, cultural or environmental…
Keywords: Sa Huỳnh culture; Early Champa; Champa; Linyi; Chiefdom; Mandala; Social complexity; Central Vietnam.
