Abstract: This paper
discusses the aging population in Vietnam and the lack of social
security provided for this ever growing group. It stresses the urgent
need to pay more attention to this population group in terms of
retirement pension, social benefits, economic support, health insurance
and general health care. Current data indicate that the majority of the
elderly have no state or private pension and have to rely on their
families or have to continue to work for their living. Around half of
the elderly have no health insurance. Many elderly people are afflicted
with ill health and have no recourse to health care services because
they cannot afford them. The situation calls for an urgent need to
expand social security to cover more thoroughly the elderly population
group.
