Abstract: On the
anniversary of 70 years on establishing the Democratic Republic of
Vietnam and of 40 years on ending the resistance war against America,
this paper looks back the issues of the independence and the
reunification of Vietnam, and how they are significant to the region of
South East Asia. The author emphasizes on the two aspects: Firstly,
after the independence on September 1945, Vietnam began to see himself
as a member of the region self-consciously. As a young and besieged
country at that time, Vietnam paid attention to the solidarity and
cooperation to the neighboring countries in South East Asia. And the
August Revolution was also meaningful to make the pathway for Vietnam’s
integration to this region. Secondly, Vietnam plays its
important role on realizing the aim of ASEAN 10 since it joined the
ASEAN. However, it is unforgetable to the fact that if Vietnam was not
independent, it was difficulty to realize the joint to ASEAN.
