Saemaul Undong in South Korea and ‘New Rural Development’ in Vietnam

Abstract: This paper is a comparative analysis of two important rural development projects which are Saemaul Undong in South Korea and Vietnam’s policy of ‘New Rural Development’ (which literally translates to “Building New Countryside”). The authors first discuss the stages of development,  implementation methods and outcomes of these two projects. Based on the lessons learnt from Saemaul Undong, the authors also propose a number of suggestions for New Rural Development to apply in Vietnam’s context.

Vietnam women marry foreigners and Vietnam's laws and policies

   Abstract: Marital and family relations involving foreigners, including the Vietnam women married to foreign men began to develop in Vietnam in 1990. By the end of 2010 there were over 294,280 cases case (Ministry of Justice 2011) Vietnam citizens married to foreigners or citizens Vietnam married and residing abroad, from over 50 countries and different regions. Of which over 80% of Vietnam women married to foreign men or Vietnam who settled abroad, only about 20% of Vietnam men marrying foreign women. The article introduces the 1) the status of Vietnam women marry foreigners,  focus on Vietnam of women marrying Korean men; and 2) Laws, Policies Vietnam on marriage with foreigner, with Protection and support marriage involving foreign; State management over marriage and family involving foreign.

The life of Vietnamese elderly people in the ageing period

Abstract: Currently, Vietnam is facing with population ageing status, the elderly people has over 10% of the population. Population ageing at a rapid pace will arise a lot of problems such as the state budget will have to spend more for health care, retirement, pension, social welfare. Elderly cannot accumulate material, most of them still have to work for a living, poor health, so they are very vulnerable to the economic and social risks. This paper focuses on finding out the basics of material and spiritual life, health and health care services as well as proposing the welfare policy for the elderly. The paper also gives some recommendations to improve the policy implementation related to the elderly in a context of population ageing as it has been taking place quickly in Vietnam.

Vietnamese Buddhists: Issues on current statistics and a measurement suggestion

Abstract: Statistics on Buddhists in Vietnam emerges as a concern among the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, government offices on religious management, and religious researchers. There have been different perspectives on identifying Vietnamese Buddhists, leading to different statistics on Buddhists reported by the Vietnamese Buddhist Sangha, Government Committee for Religious Affairs, and General Statistics Office. Based on reviewing major definitions of Vietnamese Buddhists and limitations in statistical methods regarding Buddhist identification, this paper first presents a rationale of a scale development using for Buddhist identification. This scale assesses the level of proselytism of Buddhist practitioners in order to identify a Buddhist. Then, this paper reports the findings of the scale application from the project Nafosted VIII1.1-2012.05.

Buddhists and ethical orientation in business: An empirical analysis in Hanoi

Abstract: How to find out an effective way to promote ethical conduct in a business is a topic which has been attracting many sociologists. Religion is one of the factors that may possess high possibilities to help solve this problem because it creates inner control for business people. This article summarizes highlights from researches about relationship between religion and business ethics in general and Buddhism and business ethics in particular. These materials also give us great suggestion to design an empirical research in Hanoi. Buddhism sets general principles and guidelines for individuals to improve their characters by having self-discipline and good manner. Hanoi Buddhists claimed that they judged a business behavior to be ethical or not due to Buddhism’s core beliefs. Nevertheless, while they shared the common core beliefs, they displayed diverse attitude towards ethical dilemmas in real world of business, and sometimes, they even show opposing opinions to Buddhism rules.

Challenges on professionalizing social work services for children in special circumstances

Abstract: Social work is a professional profession with over a century of historical development history in the world. However, this profession has been officially recognized in Vietnam since 2010. As a profession is at its early stage of involving in supporting vulnerable people and people in need in Vietnam, there are both advantages and challenges for professional social work services to be ensured that moves towards the current regional and international trends. This issue needs to be received further attention in the efforts of care and protection of children in special circumstances and vulnerable children (approximately 4.28 million children, accounting for 5% of the population and 18.2 % of the total number of children). Up to date, the number of children in special circumstances that can access and benefit from professional care services, such as social work is very limited. Therefore, the professionalization of social work services is very crucial to contribute actively to improve and enhance the quality of children with special circumstances' lives. This paper analyzes the challenges of professionalization of social work services for children in special circumstances through the four aspects: laws and policies; service system capacity; staff capacity; training capacity in social work. The findings, then, provide implications for the professionalization of social work services for children in special circumstances.

Current status of health insurance's participation and the health care quality by health insurance card

Abstract: Vietnamese Health Insurance is a type of insurance bringing up profound communal meanings, which gathers financial contributions from the social community to pay for participants and provides them appropriate health care services. This paper focuses on analyzing the current situation of health insurance's participation and health care quality via health insurance card in 4 communes, Thanh Cong Ward (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi), Ward 13 (Tan Binh, Ho Chi Minh City), Huala commune (City Son La), Phu Hung commune (Cai Nuoc District, Ca Mau Province). The proportion of people's participation in health insurance differs between geographical areas, namely 88% at Thanh Cong Ward, 90.9% at  Ward 13, 24% at Huala communes, and 54.3% at Phu Hung commune. Additionally, health care services provided by health insurance card are ensured and improving its quality

Risk factors for spousal violence in rural Vietnam: A sociological analysis

Abstract: The issue of spousal violence in rural areas has attracted attention from many researchers. This article contributes a theoretical insight into the issue through analyzing ecological system theory as well as characteristic features of rural Vietnam. Accordingly, spousal violence is put under the impact of specific social, cultural environment and inter-personal relationship of different levels. The article analyzes risk factors of spousal violence in rural Vietnam at macrosystem level including social norms, social values regarding femininity and masculinity; social position of women; patriarchy; at microsystem level including spousal conflict; breadwinner role of men (which directly relates to patriarchy) and inter-generation violence.

Abstract: Our country is currently in the process of international economic integration, with a lot of changes in the economic, social and consequence of the transformation of social relations, including labor relations. So research requires labor relations in enterprises in the new period is essential, so that construction labor relations harmonious enterprise, create stability and development. Want to do so, we first need to learn the basics of labor relations, that is: the concept of labor relations, the subject of labor relations, the form, content and the weak factors affecting labor relations in enterprises.

Medical examination and treatment in Tay Nguyen: Seen from the perspective of the welfare state in the field of health

Abstract: People’s medical examination and treatment in the Central Highlands is a important issue in the social development and social development management in these provinces. In medical, the welfare state do not only contributes to control the inequality in people’s medical examination and treatment but also promotes the right to health care is universal. To ensure stability and social development and people's livelihood, the state must have a health policy that  fits people's needs in medical. Although there are many changes in the health benefits in the Central Highlands, the right to health and medical care of people has not been guaranteed in the direction of progress and social justice, especially in the poor and minorities.

The impacted factors on current situation of training administrative staff at local level

Abstract: This article mentions two main contents including the factors impacts on existed situation and the factor impacts on the demand for training and implementing of local staff members. The result was based on the fieldwork in three districts of Thai Binh province. Each part would be divided into three groups of impacts such as staff members’ personal features, political issues and training agencies’ issues.

Sociology of consumption: Basic research terms from the perspectives of classical sociologists

Abstract: This article summarizes and generalizes some concepts and perspectives related to sociology of consumption of classical theorists, especially Veblen, Simmel, Bourdieu and Baudrillard. Besides, the article compares and contrasts the similarities and differences among four mentioned authors’ viewpoints. It also introduces some “Taste transference model” among social classes which are applied in some researches of consumption issue today. Last but not least, the article mentions some contemporary consumption’s issues and trends followed by perspectives of researchers from developed countries in the world. It is suggested to have further research in the context of globalization and international integration in Vietnam today.

The relationship between religion and marriage from different perspectives

Abstract: Religion and family are two basic social institutions and important in the life of human society, as it ensures the basic needs and indispensable. The role of religion in marriage and family as the theme has been a lot of domestic and foreign researchers concerned with the significant results showed that religion is both a contributing factor in the stability, help prevent prevention and settlement of conflicts, conflict in marriage, enhance satisfaction for marriage, reducing domestic violence, divorce, but also a factor that can lead to conflict in the family. This article studies at some of the foreign researchers and Vietnam on this issue, as well as some discussion of the role of religion for marriage and family, and clues for research Future.

Role of social work in primary health care

Abstract: Primary health care is identified as one of the key tasks of Vietnam health care system with an important goal, enhancing the quality of health care services for people. There are different groups involving in this system including Social work. This article will demonstrate the importance of Social work as a profession in primary health care system and discuss the roles of social worker. With the special perspectives, Social work not only cares about people but also about the environment in which they live. In addition, Social work’s intervention services for clients based on their strengths. Therefore, Social work is an effective approach contributing to effectiveness of primary health care services in Vietnam.
